Corgis rank among the most popular dog breeds in the world. Corgis are adorable pets with wonderful personalities. They are known for being friendly and outgoing, and they make great pets.

One of the first questions you may ask before adopting a dog would be “How much would the dog shed and how would I take care of the shedding?” Keep reading on to find out how much Corgis actually shed and how to take care of the shedding properly.

About Corgi Coats

What could be more adorable than a corgi with a coat of fur? Corgis are known for their short, stubby legs and long, thick coats of fur. While all corgis have some type of fur coat, the colors and textures can vary greatly. Some coats are smooth and sleek while others are fluffy and soft. No matter what the coat looks like though, it's sure to be just as lovable as the pup itself!

A Corgi's coat is one of the most distinguishing features of their breed. Usually, we see two types of coats in Corgis - a smooth coat and a long coat. The smooth-coated Corgis have a short, thick, weather-resistant outer coat and a soft undercoat. The long-coated Corgis have an abundant outer coat with feathering on the legs, chest, underside, and tail.

Today, generally there are more Long Coats being bred than Smooth Coats because they're considered to be more attractive by some people. But both coats have their fans!

There are certain unique features of Corgi coats that make them distinguishable as well as attractive. Those include-

  • A Corgi's coat is very unique, and no other breed looks quite like them! This makes them stand out in a crowd and makes them special members of their family.
  • A well-groomed Corgi with a healthy coat looks amazing! Their hair can be so soft and fluffy. It's definitely eye-catching and clearly noticeable.
  • Corgi coat, especially that of a Pembroke Welsh Corgi, is actually a tri-color coat and that makes their coat’s appearance distinct as not every breed of dog has a tri-color coat.

Do Corgis Shed?

As we already discussed quite a lot about Corgi coats, now comes the actual question - do Corgis shed? The answer is yes, Corgis do shed. In fact, they can be quite prolific shedders, particularly during the spring and fall when they blow their coats. However, with regular brushing and proper grooming, you can minimize the amount of hair that ends up on your floors and furniture.
There are two types of shedding in Corgis – seasonal and constant. Seasonal shedding occurs twice a year – once in the spring and again in the fall. Constant shedding is just that, constant! It’s important to be prepared for both types of Shedding because it might really affect your daily routine if you aren’t expecting it.

Why do Corgis Actually shed?

In general, dogs actually shed to keep their coats clean and healthy! That is also the case for Corgis. By shedding, Corgis get rid of old hair, dirt, and other debris that can build up in their coats. Shedding is also important for keeping their skin healthy as it helps remove dead skin cells and prevent those from accumulating.

What Can Trigger Your Corgi to Shed a Lot?

Corgis are adorable, friendly dogs that can often be seen with a big smile on their face. However, Corgis can also be quite the shedder! Several things can trigger your Corgi to shed a lot.

One of the most common causes of excessive shedding in Corgis is allergies. If your dog is allergic to something in their environment, they may start to excessively shed as a way to get rid of the allergens. Some common allergens for dogs include pollen, grasses, and dust mites. If you think your Corgi may be suffering from allergies, it's important to take them to the veterinarian so they can get properly diagnosed and treated.

Another common cause of excessive shedding in Corgis is poor nutrition. Dogs who aren't getting enough protein or other essential nutrients in their diet will often start shedding more than usual as their bodies try to conserve energy elsewhere. To help keep your Corgi's coat looking healthy and shiny, make sure they're eating a balanced diet that includes plenty of high-quality protein sources like meat or fish.

There are few other things that trigger your Corgi to shed a lot. One of them is changing seasons. During the spring and fall, your corgi will naturally shed more hair since their coat is getting thicker or thinner to adapt to the weather. Another reason might be if they are stressed out or not feeling well. If your dog isn't getting enough exercise, that could also lead to them shedding more hair since they're not burning off all their energy. Finally, if your pup has a skin condition, that could also lead to them losing more hair than normal.

Things to Do to Reduce Your Corgi’s Hair on the Floor or Furniture

Corgis are adorable, but they might require a bit more maintenance when it comes to shedding. There are a few things you can do to help reduce the amount of hair that ends up on your floor or furniture:

  • Brush your dog regularly: This will remove any loose hair before it gets a chance to spread around your house.
  • Feed them a high-quality diet: A good diet will help keep their coat healthy and shiny, which means less hair loss overall.
  • Take your dog to exercise outside: Give your dog plenty of exercise outdoors to get rid of excess energy (and shedding). A tired corgi is less likely to shed.
  • Invest in a good vacuum cleaner: Pet hair can be difficult to remove from carpets and furniture, so make sure you have a vacuum that is specifically designed for pet hair removal.

Groom Your Corgi to Reduce Shedding

There’s no doubt about it – corgis are a high-maintenance breed when it comes to grooming. But with a little bit of effort, you can keep your furry friend looking and feeling his best and reduce the amount of hair he sheds in the process. Here are some tips:

  • Start by brushing your corgi’s coat daily. This will help remove any loose hair and distribute oils evenly, which will make his coat shiny and healthy-looking.
  • Use a slicker brush or comb to further remove any loose hair or mats from the coat. Again, be sure to brush in the direction of fur growth for optimal results.
  • Use a good quality dog shampoo to bathe him at least once a month (more often if he gets dirty or starts to smell bad). Be sure to rinse him thoroughly so that all the soap is removed – otherwise, it could irritate his skin or cause bald patches.
  • Trim your corgi's fur around the eyes, ears, and other sensitive areas regularly to prevent excess hair from accumulating in these areas and causing irritation or infection.

Conclusion

There are plenty of reasons to love Corgis. Even though they shed a lot, their sweet personalities more than make up for it. Corgis are incredibly friendly and loving pets. They're also very active and playful, always up for a game of fetch or tug-of-war. Plus, who can resist their adorable faces and stubby little legs? By following the tips and information we shared in this article, you can easily manage and even reduce your Corgi’s shedding and that would allow you to enjoy your time with your Corgi more without worrying too much about the shedding.
